What is a Visume and how you should go about making it 

What is a Visume? It is exactly what you may think it is, a ‘Video Resume’. With the advancement of technology, it is becoming more common that employers are requesting their potential employees to submit visume’s to be able to see what kind of person they are and the type of soft skills they carry.  

How do you create your visume like a pro? Here’s a few steps!  

1.Prepare a script 

Your script should include your name, overview of work experience, key achievements, skills and why you are best suited for the role!  

 2.Decide on your format

 3.Prep your visume tools 

These days, the camera of your handphones would be sufficient but for higher resolution videos, you could opt for a DSLR. You would also need a standee/tripod to hold your preferred recording device to prevent any shaking from happening. If you do not have access to natural lighting, you could make use of studio lighting or a ring light.  

4.Dresscode 

Make sure to always look smart and presentable! Your first impression to your employer will be through your visume and first impressions are a big thing in the working world. Although dressing in bold colours and fashion forward pieces may work for some, you must be careful of the possibility of a colour clash. If you aren’t sure what would be appropriate,  

Women : a basic blouse paired with a cardigan or blazer with long pants, skirt. a dress! 

Men : A polo-tee or a white buttoned-up paired with long dress pants! 

 5.Ambience 

Make sure that you are in a nice and quiet environment so as to not interfere with your audio recording. Regarding your backgrounds, having a white or neutral coloured background would be preferred. Although, having light furniture in the background (no messy clothes etc) could help to elevate your visume.  

6.Recording several takes 

Practice makes perfect! Practicing and having a few takes of the video will allow you to look back on any mistakes easily and make the needed edits. Make sure to save a few in both portrait and landscape mode just in case different platforms require a different format.  

 7.Video Editing Tools 

Make sure to double check and edit your videos wherever necessary! The preferred timing for your video should only be 1 – 2 minutes max. Use this chance to edit according to optimal timings, mend your video’s lighting, cropping your video (in case your space is not as desired) to your preferred outcome, captions if needed and any more that u may need.
